AME Church pastors add ERISA claims to retreat lawsuit

By Abby Wargo (August 22, 2022, 5:53 p.m. EDT) – A group of pastors have amended their action alleging that the African Methodist Episcopal Church’s pension fund is more than $90 million short of assets, adding that The church’s “catastrophic failure” to properly oversee the fund violates federal benefits law.

In federal court in Tennessee on Friday, pastors in the proposed class action lawsuit filed an amended lawsuit adding seven more claims for relief under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act in the event the court finds the plan Church retirement is governed by federal law.
