khunti: The administration of Khunti issues a notice to the church regarding the “conversion” of minors | Ranchi News

RANCHI: The administration of Khunti district has sent a notice to the Roman Catholic Church of Khunti requesting clarification whether the alleged conversion of 10 minors in the Tamda Sirkatoli area on May 22 under the Tapkara area of the district violated the anti-conversion law passed by state government.
The Khunti administration on Tuesday registered an FIR at the Tapkara police station against the Roman Catholic Church official father and others in connection with the incident following initial investigations. He alleged that permission from the administration had not been taken for the conversion as required by the 2017 Freedom of Religion Act.
Roman Catholic Church spokesman Vijay Gudia claimed the May 22 ceremony was just a first ritual of the conversion exercise. He said the requests from the minors and their parents are still being considered by the church.
He said: “The administration registered the FIR without considering our views. We would provide our views in response to the notice. The deadline for the notice is June 16.
He said that according to current law, the person interested in conversion must file an application with the administration, adding that the church has nothing to do with it. It can be mentioned here that the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had also become aware of the incidence. NCPCR Chairman Priyank Kanungo said, “We would take appropriate action after reviewing the situation.”
